1. Underweight people
Ginger is used as a weight loss aid for people with diabetes, obesity, and hypoglycemia. It is known to increase the metabolism, but if it is being used for other reasons, such as an anti-inflammatory, weight loss can be an unwanted side effect.
It works as a weight loss tool as it increases the pH of the stomach and stimulates digestive enzymes for its high fiber content. Efficiency in digestive processes like this leads to weight loss.
The complications of being underweight an induce poor muscle mass, hair loss, menstrual irregularities and vitamin deficiency.
2. Pregnant women
The stimulants in ginger are so powerful, they can lead to pregnant women having induced contractions before she is ready to give birth. Ginger is useful for settling the stomach, and can be useful for curing morning sickness in early stages of pregnancy, but should be avoided in later stages.
Ginger can also interfere with the absorption of vitamins in the body, which is less than ideal if you are pregnant.
3. People with a blood disorder
Ginger thins the blood, and so should be avoided by people who have blood disorders, such as hemophilia, as it may cause the blood to become dangerously thin. Hemophilia is a rare genetic disorder in which the blood is not able to clot properly, and in the event of an injury, the sufferer is at risk of bleeding to death.
The over stimulation of ginger in hemophiliacs can also lead to hemorrhaging in the body.
4. People who take certain medications
Ginger should be avoided if you take medications such as beta-blockers, anticoagulants, and insulin drugs. Because ginger thins the blood, it can have adverse effects on the way some of these life-saving medicines are absorbed into the body.
If you fall into one of these categories but are not ready to give up ginger, there are alternatives such as cayenne pepper, red paprika, and sweet peppers. These can all be added to dishes to mimic the warming heat that ginger has.
